Bible Reading Record

Much as it took God upsetting the apple cart at McLean Baptist to get me out, it has taken Him having me pick up and start reading a book that has challenged my views on the atonement to get me to reading the Bible again. Now I have to start going through it to find out what it really says on the atonement.

If I make the record of my reading public, it may help me to stay accountable about it.

Saturday, October 14, 2006 Romans 1-3 NIV

These chapters are about mankind's rejection of God and persistence in wickedness, despite God's revelation of Himself in creation. Jew and Gentile alike are under condemnation. Paul begins to present the background of the gospel and faith in the work of Christ.
Here the NIV uses the word "atonement" in Romans 3:25, where the AV and ESV do not.

Sunday, October 15, 2006 Romans 4-5 ESV

These mention the death of Christ at the end. More later.

Thursday, October 26, 2006 Romans 6 ESV

United with Christ in baptism.
Old self crucified with him, to free us from sin.
He died to sin, once for all (verse 10).
Not under law, but under grace (verse 14).
Sin no more. We were slaves to sin, now to Christ.
Sin leads to death, God's gift and new life lead to eternal life.

Romans 7 ESV

Dead to the law through the body of Christ.
Dead to the law, alive in the Spirit.
The law is holy, and shows us our sinful nature.
Inner conflict of sin and law.
Conflict of law of spirit (God) and law of flesh (sin).
"Body of death." Thanks for deliverance.

Romans 8 ESV

He condemned sin in the flesh.
Set the mind on the spirit, not the flesh.
Redemption of all creation.
We are more than conquerors.

Monday, October 30, 2006 Romans 9 ESV

Paul's agony over Israel's lost state.
God's purpose of election.
Gentiles obtained righteousness by faith, but Israel stumbled on Christ.
