Religion. That's a broad topic, right? I have no intent of discussing every aspect of every religion at the moment. But I need a place to organize links to my thoughts on various subjects related to religion.
The spiritual disciplines page has thoughts on that topic, beginning with the spiritual formation conference with Don Whitney.
Here are some prayers that I have written.
Here is a description of the struggle with meaning that I am having as a result of reading Ancient-Future Faith.
Here is a description of the struggles that I am having with the concept of Christus Victor as a result of reading Ancient-Future Faith.
My recent reading has lead me to struggle with the nature of the atonement. The word is really at-one-ment, and originally meant reconciliation. I am doing a word study on its use in the Scriptures. The results are somewhat surprising, given what I have heard all my life.
These struggles have led me to begin Bible reading again. This is my Bible reading record.
We are in the process of visiting around, looking for a new church. Please pray for us as we seek God's will. I am posting some thoughts on this search as it goes on. As of 6/10/2007, it looks like we are settling in at Leawood Baptist. As of mid-August, 2007, we are back at McLean Baptist. Interestingly, I have since learned that the name McLean comes from Mac Gillean, meaning "the son of the servant of John."
When I was at Indiana University for graduate school the first time around, I got involved in singing with the choir of All Saints Antiochian Church of Bloomington. I did it primarily to be able to sing in Greek, Russian, Romanian, and Arabic. I also became involved because I wanted to learn more about this way of thinking that was so very different from what I was used to. As time goes on, I plan to add a page about my thoughts on Orthodoxy.
For now, I was slightly surprised to find an article in Wikipedia on Oriental Orthodoxy. This is a group of churches that rejected the duophysite declarations of the Council of Chalcedon, but still maintain that they are not monophysite. There is even a branch of this group (specifically the Coptic) in Britain, called the British Orthodox Church. They even have a fellowship that apparently anyone (at least any Brit) can join to discuss their faith.
Based on discussions with a friend, Barry Anderson, I am considering joining the American branch of the British Order of St. Aidan and St. Hilda. This is a group whose members seek to develop and follow a rule of life based on the spirituality of the Celtic saints. They even have some Baptists in it, so there is yet hope for me!
I am developing a personal rule of life for my participation in the order.
This is a time that I hear bandied about a lot. I don't know exactly what it means, nor whether I would want to be involved in it, but I want to learn more about it. It seems to involve mysticism and openness to other faith traditions. The folks at Worldview Weekend don't like it.
Here is a page of my thoughts on Christmas.
Here is a page of miscellaneous thoughts on religion.
On Wednesday night, January 31, 2007, I heard Mitzi Minor from Memphis Theological Seminary give an off the wall talk about the book of Revelation. I have written a comment on that talk.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
This is July 22, 2007 (Hurricane Elvis + 4 day). I just saw a web site from ex-Jews for Jesus that talks about spiritual abuse within the Jews for Jesus organization. This is one of the most disturbing things among many disturbing things I have encountered recently. There is even a web site about spiritual abuse.
Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.
